El Pianista Trail Hike

1 Day

The El Pianista Trail stands out as one of the premier hikes in Boquete. Unlike more popular trails such as Pipeline or Lost Waterfalls, this path offers a unique experience in impressive and rare cloud forest ecosystems. The El Pianista Trail remains relatively uncrowded, providing a more serene hiking experience.

The trail gained notoriety after the mysterious disappearance of two Dutch women known as “The Lost Girls of Panama.” Their belongings were found on the continental divide, well beyond the trail’s end, which brought significant attention to the area. Guides are not mandatory. Nonetheless, we recommend having a guide for safety, as certain sections can be challenging and it’s easy to lose your way with a wrong turn.

The El Pianista Trail hike includes roundtrip transportation, with your guide taking you to the trailhead, conveniently located near Boquete. The trail begins near an Italian restaurant called El Pianista. You’ll start by passing a few local homes before walking for approximately 35 minutes across a farm owned by Mireya Moscoso, a former president of Panama. This farm features cattle, with majestic mountains visible in the background.

As you enter the lush cloud forest, the trail becomes uneven. About half of the El Pianista Trail hike takes place amidst clouds, enveloping you in a dripping rainforest filled with mist. The sounds of wildlife surround you, making this trail exceptional for birdwatching—keep an eye out for the quetzal and other species like flycatchers, woodpeckers, motmots, black guans, and hummingbirds. You’ll also encounter diverse vegetation, including orchids, bromeliads, heliconias, ferns, vines, and towering trees.

You’ll cross two creeks on your ascent, gaining about 2,000 feet over 3 kilometers. Thick clouds will surround you as you near the summit. The narrow paths carved into the earth create small canyons, with sides that can exceed your height. At the summit, a spectacular view of Boquete may greet you, though sometimes you’ll find yourself enveloped in clouds. The trail spans approximately 8.5 kilometers roundtrip.
