Bayano Caves Tour

1 Day

The Bayano Caves are a tourist attraction located near Panama City that, while not widely known, offers impressive sights. To reach the caves, a two-hour drive from Panama City toward the Darien Province is required. Upon arrival, visitors will board a local wooden boat for a thirty-minute journey across Lake Bayano, which features islands that are actually mountain peaks. Lake Bayano was created following the construction of a dam on the Bayano River for a hydroelectric power plant, the second largest in the country, producing around 16% of Panama’s total electricity. The lake serves as a habitat for various animal species and is popular for birdwatching.

After crossing the lake, the exploration of the Bayano Caves begins. The boat will dock in a marshy valley where visitors will walk along the riverbank to the welcome sign. A guide will provide a safety briefing regarding appropriate conduct inside the caves. The limestone that forms the caves and canyons was eroded over centuries. Some cave formations allow sunlight to enter, illuminating the interior and creating reflections on the walls. Other sections of the tour occur in darkness, but headlamps are provided.

Inside the caves, there are waterfalls and rivers. Swimming may be required in certain areas, depending on the water level, which the guide will monitor for safety. After completing the tour, visitors will return to the boat. Throughout the experience, it is possible to observe animals such as monkeys, capybaras, sloths, caimans, bats, fish, and frogs. Once back at the meeting point, visitors can relax, have a meal, and use the kayaks on Lake Bayano.
