Panama Canal Transit

1 Day

Crossing the Panama Canal is a unique experience. Many people opt for partial transits, which can start in either direction—northbound from the Pacific Ocean at the Amador Causeway or southbound from Gamboa. Regardless of the starting point, a bus ride of 45 minutes to or from Gamboa is included. The itinerary remains the same; only the direction differs.

The journey begins with a passage under the Bridge of the Americas. During the partial transit, ships are raised 18 meters in two stages at the Miraflores locks. Following this, vessels enter Miraflores Lake, an artificial freshwater lake that separates this lock from the Pedro Miguel locks, the second set on the Pacific side, where boats ascend an additional 9 meters in one step. After this ascent, the newer Centennial Bridge becomes visible.

The final segment of the crossing leads to the Gaillard Cut, commonly referred to as Culebra Cut because of its snake-like shape. This area was particularly challenging to construct as it traverses the Continental Divide. The journey continues for 13.7 kilometers to the Gamboa Dredging area, where the transit concludes.
