Situado en Col\u00f3n, el parque nacional abarca 35.929 hect\u00e1reas. Si bien muchos visitantes se centran en la zona marina y en las fortificaciones hist\u00f3ricas que rodean la bah\u00eda de Portobelo \u2014declarada Patrimonio de la Humanidad por la UNESCO en 1980\u2014, 15.465 hect\u00e1reas est\u00e1n compuestas por bosques primarios que ofrecen la posibilidad de realizar caminatas por la selva. Esta parte de Panam\u00e1 es una de las menos desarrolladas y alberga la Sierra Llorona, caracterizada por sus frecuentes precipitaciones, que se registran durante 286 d\u00edas al a\u00f1o. El Cerro Bruja, el punto m\u00e1s alto de la sierra, alcanza una elevaci\u00f3n de 979 metros y es parte de la cuenca continental, donde nacen varios r\u00edos, entre ellos el Guanche, Piedras, Iguanita, Iguana, Cascajal y Brazuelo.    <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Se puede llegar a la <strong>cascada Salto de Las Ranas <\/strong>mediante una caminata de 15 kil\u00f3metros de dificultad moderada, aunque el tramo final presenta mayor exigencia. El recorrido requiere aproximadamente cuatro horas para llegar a la cascada y otras cuatro para el regreso. La traves\u00eda implica cruzar r\u00edos y atravesar zonas selv\u00e1ticas dentro del parque para llegar a una cascada virgen.  <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">La caminata hacia la <strong>cascada Salto del Mono<\/strong> requiere acampar una noche dentro del parque nacional. Esta exigente ruta de ida y vuelta abarca 20 kil\u00f3metros y comienza en el pueblo de Iguanita, justo antes de Portobelo. El recorrido sigue el curso del r\u00edo Guanche, lo que implica cruzarlo varias veces, pudiendo los excursionistas terminar mojados. El sendero puede presentar zonas de barro y es f\u00e1cil desorientarse entre la densa vegetaci\u00f3n si no se cuenta con un gu\u00eda. La zona de acampada designada se encuentra a un kil\u00f3metro de la cascada Salto del Mono; con una altura de 74 metros, esta es la cascada m\u00e1s alta de la provincia de Col\u00f3n, en Panam\u00e1.    <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Sierra Llorona<\/strong>, establecida como reserva nacional en marzo de 2026, abarca 16.436 hect\u00e1reas de bosques primarios y ecosistemas \u00fanicos. Esta regi\u00f3n act\u00faa como un corredor biol\u00f3gico que conecta el Parque Nacional Chagres \u2014donde los visitantes pueden realizar el recorrido por la Aldea Ind\u00edgena Ember\u00e1\u2014 con el Parque Nacional Portobelo. Las investigaciones realizadas en la reserva han registrado m\u00e1s de 550 avistamientos de mam\u00edferos pertenecientes a 22 especies; entre ellas destacan animales emblem\u00e1ticos como el tapir de Baird, el jaguar, el puma, el ocelote y el pecar\u00ed, junto a especies m\u00e1s comunes como el agut\u00ed, la ardilla gris y el conejo pintado, todos ellos fundamentales para procesos ecol\u00f3gicos como la dispersi\u00f3n de semillas y la regeneraci\u00f3n forestal.
