Panama Rainforest Discovery Center

1 Día

The Panama Rainforest Discovery Center is located in Gamboa, about 40–45 minutes from Panama City. It is an environmental and ecotourism project managed by the Eugene Eisenmann Avifauna Foundation. The primary goal of this non-profit organization is the conservation of birds through environmental and sustainable initiatives. You can visit the site either by joining an excursion that includes transportation or by traveling on your own. If you choose to go independently, please note that while there is parking near the entrance, the access road is in poor condition.

The Panama Rainforest Discovery Center is suitable for people of all ages. The forest trails are quite accessible, measuring 1.1 kilometers in length and 1.2 meters in width. They are covered with fine gravel, which helps manage mud during the rainy season. The trails are considered easy to navigate and can even be traversed with a suitable baby stroller. The site features two rest areas: one along the shores of Lake Calamito—which includes a platform with benches for observing aquatic wildlife—and the hummingbird station (also known as the visitor center), which is a favorite among visitors.

The visitor center is an open, self-sustaining structure spanning 140 square meters. It stands in the heart of the rainforest, blending seamlessly into its surroundings. It was constructed using 70% recycled materials salvaged from old buildings in the Panama Canal Zone. The facility includes a viewing platform, a service area, and restrooms. You can sit comfortably and watch the hummingbirds while enjoying a cup of coffee or tea, both of which are included in the price of admission.

The observation tower serves as an alternative to the Gamboa aerial tram, offering similar views. It is located 200 meters from the visitor center. A spiral staircase with 174 steps leads to the top platform, located 32 meters above the ground, just above the forest canopy. The tower features observation platforms every 8 meters, allowing visitors to take a break if needed.

Those looking for a great birdwatching spot in Panama can visit the Panama Rainforest Discovery Center, located in the Pipeline Road area within Soberania National Park. This is one of the most renowned birdwatching locations in the world. The Audubon Society recorded 385 bird species here, setting a record for the highest number of bird species observed within a 24-hour period. Other animal species that can be observed include monkeys, sloths, coatis, anteaters, snakes, turtles, iguanas, and butterflies, among others.
