The Chagres Challenge isn’t for the faint of heart! The Chagres River is a class II and III rafting river. Parts of the river feature alternating currents with backwaters classified as class II, while other sections contain class III rapids. This river remains largely hidden from the outside world because it flows through Chagres National Park, which lacks accessible road access.
This tour begins bright and early—you’ll be picked up from your Panama City hotel at 5 a.m. in a 4×4 vehicle. You’ll travel east, passing through the mountain town of Cerro Azul, before arriving at the remote village of San Cristobal. After breakfast, your hike kicks off at 8 a.m. You’ll trek along a narrow jungle trail for approximately an hour and a half, venturing deeper into the rainforest until you reach Piedras River, a tributary of the Chagres River. Depending on water levels, you might start rafting here or continue hiking, as this river can be quite shallow. If you begin here, be ready to portage the raft across several sections.
The Chagres Challenge’s thrilling five-hour rafting adventure typically starts around 11 a.m. Along the way, you’ll encounter several Embera tribes living in this pristine rainforest. Few people get the chance to experience this untouched jungle. Keep your eyes peeled for wildlife like sloths, monkeys, river otters, iguanas, numerous fish species, and birds such as toucans.
You’ll enjoy a lunch break along the riverbank. You’ll reach Madden Lake around 4:30 p.m., where you’ll board an outboard motorboat or traditional indigenous wooden canoe for a thirty-minute ride to the nearest road. You’ll arrive back in the city around 7 p.m.
